Wentworth College offers a comprehensive and academically rigorous curriculum where every child is educated to achieve to his or her fullest potential. In the senior school we offer both the Cambridge International Examinations as well as NCEA. A culture of learning and achievement exists within the College and a number of our students have topped the country in their examination results.
Wentworth College emphasises the best of a traditional education with core values and principles of respect, honesty, working hard and caring for others. Many students describe the school as being like a family. Students and student learning are our focus. We prepare our students to be high achievers and critical thinkers in a world of constant change.
Our teachers are the school's most important resource. Specialist teachers and teaching facilities for all levels from Years 7 to 13 enable students to work to their highest possible standards and to meet personal and academic challenges with confidence. Small class sizes enable our teachers to know the students well and a strong pastoral care system ensures the nurturing of each student. The Wentworth College Trust Board is committed to having class sizes of no larger than 25 students. However, the current pupil/teacher ratio is 1:11, with an average class size of approximately 15 students.
An effective House system is central to all aspects of educational life at the College. House Leaders and House Tutors support and encourage students to pursue the many exciting opportunities available at Wentworth, especially in leadership and service roles. A positive, competitive House and school spirit is fostered, and students rapidly develop a sense of belonging and pride in their school. There are many opportunities for all students to participate in House competitions and a wide range of co-curricular activities including both sports and cultural and artistic interests. Over 70% of our students represent the College in a sport which includes the traditional codes as well as rowing, sailing, fencing and pistol shooting.
School is a time for young people to learn new skills and try different activities. We encourage our students to play hard and work hard in all they undertake.
Wentworth College provides a quality education in an idyllic setting at the end of the Whangaparaoa peninsula by the sea.
